The City of Berkeley
The City of Berkeley is a diverse and exciting community offering a variety of recreational activities, entertainment, arts, culture, and shopping (www.ci.berkeley.ca.us).

Berkeley residents are passionate and vocal about social and political issues. There are many ways students can become involved in local civic and community affairs—from serving on a city commission, to Cal in Local Government internships, or Cal Corps-sponsored public service and volunteer programs (FAQ: communityrelations.berkeley.edu).

Berkeley’s Southside neighborhood
The southside is Berkeley’s most popular neighborhood for student living and includes residence halls, fraternities, sororities, co-ops, and private apartments. Telegraph Avenue is fun and busy with cafés, restaurants, stores, and street vendors. The southside is also a diverse neighborhood of tenants, homeowners, students, and older residents. Sometimes this can lead to conflicts over late-night noise, parties, and differing lifestyles. The Chancellor’s Task Force on Student/Neighbor Relations is trying to bridge this divide and improve the quality of life for all residents.
