Once a year
There are a number of annual activities to watch out for: Calapalooza (see here), Cal Parents Weekend, E-Week (a five-day celebration by engineering students), the National Chicano Student Conference, the Take Back the Night march, and the Cal Band Spring Show, to name a few. To find out what's going on, check the online campus calendar at events.berkeley.edu.
Welcome Week (August 20 through August 24) previews the fall semester with workshops, open houses, and orientation activities for all new students. Welcome events continue during the first few weeks of classes (welcomeweek.berkeley.edu).
The Chancellor's Reception for new fall undergraduates is your chance to meet the Chancellor. An invitation-which you should receive in the mail-is your ticket of admission. (If you do not receive an invitation in the mail by mid-August, contact Lila Blanco, 510/643-7003; urel.berkeley.edu/newstudents.)
The Berkeley Project in October unites students with the City of Berkeley to rejuvenate the community through a variety of service projects (bp.berkeley.edu).
New spring students will be welcomed by the Chancellor at a reception in January. (If you do not receive an invitation by early January, contact Lila Blanco, 510/643-7003; urel.berkeley.edu/newstudents.)
During the spring, Charter Day celebrates the University's 140th birthday; Lambda Chi Alpha fills Sproul Plaza with flowers during the annual Daffodil Festival (proceeds go to charity); Cal students put on the 2008 Cal Student Leadership Symposium; and the Tang Center sponsors National Condom Day. In April, there's the African American Step Show, Queer Awareness Week, and UC Jazz Ensembles hosts the Pacific Coast Collegiate Jazz Festival. These are just a few of the hundreds of events happening spring semester.
Cal Day, a campus-wide open house, is on Saturday, April 12, 2008 (berkeley.edu/calday).
Graduation, which includes 64 different ceremonies, occurs during the last few weeks of school. The Chancellor and the Californians host a Commencement Convocation for graduating seniors. After February 1, graduation and commencement information can be accessed online.
