Lounge areas
General campus hang out space is disappearing! Most residence halls have lounge areas, but the use of these spaces is generally restricted to residents. Many academic departments have a library, reading room, or lounge, though some of these areas are also restricted. Most are small rooms with tables, chairs, and couches, and are generally used for quiet reading or studying. We’ve put together a list of these under a section called Lounges on page 84.
Also, you’ve surely seen all the cafes surrounding the campus. It’s totally fine to buy one café latte and then monopolize a chair for two hours while you read your history assignment.
Heller Lounge, located in the MLK Jr. Student Union, is a quiet place to study or read between classes. It also houses the Open Computing Facility (www.ocf.berkeley.edu/newlab/) and is the home to the Multicultural Center (multicultural.berkeley.edu).
