Recreational Sports
You name it, they’ve got it—strength training, cardiovascular equipment, basketball, court sports, swimming, fitness classes, and more (recsports.berkeley.edu).
Cal Rec Club (CRC) offers recreational sports privileges to UC students, alumni, faculty and staff, and adult community members, with discounts available for UC spouses and domestic partners. Members have access to all recreational facilities (RSF, SCRA, GBRC, Hearst Gym, Edwards Track) during open recreation hours, receive free towel services (at RSF and Hearst only), complimentary day lockers (based on availability), and can participate in Intramural and Sport Club activities. Group exercise classes are free to all CRC members. The membership fee for Cal students is $10/semester (recsports.berkeley.edu/signup).
Cal Massage Therapy provides massage by appointment for a moderate fee. The program also provides on-site chair massage, and massage therapy/stress release workshops (online appointments, calbears.berkeley.edu/massage; 510/643-8030).

The RSF has three weight rooms, more than 100 fitness machines, three multiple-use gyms, six squash and seven racquetball/handball courts, free group X classes (for members), locker rooms, snack shop, massage therapy room, passport services, and much more (recsports.berkeley.edu; 2301 Bancroft Way; 510/642-6400).
Golden Bear Recreation Center (GBRC)
The GBRC has two gymnastic facilities, a 25-yard pool, a quarter-mile track, tennis courts, a softball field, and sand volleyball courts (recsports.berkeley.edu; 25 Sports Lane at Dwight Way on the Clark Kerr Campus; 510/642-9821).
Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area (SCRA)
This pastoral setting features the Haas Clubhouse (available to rent for all occasions), a swimming pool, a barbecue/picnic area, a play area with wading pool for children, a fitness center and locker rooms. Day passes and Cal Rec Club memberships are available for purchase (recsports.berkeley.edu; 200 Centennial Road, behind Memorial Stadium, accessible by Campus Bus Services; 510/643-6720).
Aquatic Masters is a year-round swimming program and team based upon the latest interval training methods (recsports.berkeley.edu/scam; 510/642-7796).
Team sports
Cal Intramural Sports offers an opportunity to participate in sport activities on a competitive or recreational level. Sports leagues are available in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor sports year-round, including basketball, football, tennis, soccer, softball, and volleyball. Interested individuals may enroll as a team or as a free agent. The entry period of intramural sports is once each semester. Cal Sport Clubs include 27 sports, which offer instruction, recreation, and competition for a nominal membership fee. All clubs are student-run. The program offers the campus community an alternative to intramural sports and intercollegiate athletics. Currently, more than 1000 members of the campus participate in the Sport Club Program (recsports.berkeley.edu; 510/643-8024).

The UC Martial Arts Program (UCMAP) is a world-renowned program dedicated to the instruction and development of the martial arts. Clubs cover various styles of self-defense including Judo, Wushu, and Taekwondo, all of which meet year-round. The participation fee is $120/semester for current Cal students (ucmap.org; 2301 Bancroft Way; 510/642-5730).

Physical Education

CalFIT
CalFIT offers the highest caliber of fitness and recreational opportunities, and is dedicated to the promotion of health and wellness. Personal Fitness Training: Need help designing the perfect fitness plan? Have you reached a plateau and don’t know where to go from there? Let a Personal Fitness Trainer help you design the fitness plan that is right for you. Rec Sports trainers have extensive experience working across a range of fitness interests, including peak performance, weight management, general conditioning, post-physical therapy strength training, and sports-specific training (rsweb@berkeley.edu; 510/642-7796).

Other recreational opportunities
The Cal Lodge is a full-service lodge on Donner Summit in California near North Lake Tahoe, owned by the ASUC. The Lodge features Old Tahoe style architecture and is surrounded by a beautiful forest setting. There is ski/in and ski/out access to Donner Ski Ranch, and Sugar Bowl Ski Resort provides a free shuttle bus to the lodge. Discounted rates are available to students: $20/night for Berkeley students, $25/night for other students. Scuba Diving
Non-divers can earn scuba certifications through Physical Education 47A: Introduction to Scuba Diving, offered Fall and Spring. Certified divers looking to advance their training can earn Advanced and Nitrox certifications through PE 47B, offered in the Fall. Certified divers interested in using scuba as a tool for research can take Integrative Biology C407: Introduction to Scientific Diving in the Spring. There are fees associated with these courses, and students are expected to provide most of their own equipment

Intercollegiate Athletics
Intercollegiate Athletics sponsors one of the nation’s most successful athletic programs with 27 different men’s and women’s teams involved in intercollegiate competition each year. The California program serves as a prototype for the way a contemporary college athletic program should be run: a broad-based program enjoying success in both the athletic and academic spheres backed by a vigorous fundraising organization.
